Find Answers to Questions About the DEXA Whole Body Analysis

Q: What is a DEXA Scan?

A: DEXA scans (sometimes called DXA scans) are the most precise body composition analysis tools on Earth. A DEXA body composition scan is more accurate than optical body scans (DEXA uses X-Rays to see INSIDE), more accurate than underwater hydrostatic weighing and more accurate than the Bod-Pod.

Q: I Already Know I am Fat. Why do I Need a Machine to Tell Me Exactly HOW Fat?

A: The simple answer is because, if you are ready to LOSE weight, you need to know whats working and what's not. The scale just isn't good enough. Scales measure weight. DEXA measures body fat and body muscle DIRECTLY.

Q: My Gym Has a 'Body Scanner'. Isn't that the Same Thing?

A: No. So-called optical scanners have become very popular in the last two years but they are not at all the same test. They are not as accurate and not nearly as useful. These scanners don't use X-Rays so they cannot see inside.

Q: What can DEXA Show Me?

A: Because DEXA is an incredibly precise technique, it will give you information that is not available through any other kind of test. For example, because it measures body fat directly and because such a measurement is accurate down to the ounce, you can use DEXA to determine EXACTLY how much fat you have lost since an earlier DEXA. But it will also tell you how much muscle you carry. And DEXA tells you exactly how much fat or muscle is located on each arm, each leg and on each side of your trunk. So if you are a body builder, you can see exactly how well a training regimen is working for you. With DEXA, you really do get information that is simply available any other way.

Q: How Long Does a DEXA Scan Take?

A: About 15 minutes from start to finish.

Q: How Often can I do a DEXA Scan?

A: Because the amount of X-Ray from a DEXA scan is so low, you can essentially do a scan as often as you like. Professional athletes may undergo DEXA scanning as often as every week (but usually more like every 4 weeks). And we DO offer you a substantial discount if you do frequent scanning (see our pricing page).
