Discover the Benefits of Having a DEXA Full Body Scan
Optical Scanners, Bioelectric Impedance, Bod Pod, Calipers and Tape: They ALL Fail
There are body fat tests that uses optical scanners to map the outside of your body, but these tests cannot actually look inside and see (and measure) the fat hiding within your body. There are ‘body testers’ that pass a small electric current through your body, but they are very inaccurate. There is even an egg-shaped contraption called a ‘Bod Pod’ that measures the volume of your whole body, but new studies show it is not accurate. And of course, there are older tests like using calipers to measure skin thickness or even simple measuring tape readings. But they all fail when compared to DEXA. Finally, there is the former ‘gold-standard test’ called ‘Underwater Hydrostatic Weighing’ that involves floating in a pool water, holding your breath and sitting on a scale---all at the same time. This test can be pretty accurate, but it still doesn’t beat DEXA.

DEXA: The Choice of Professional Sport Teams, Olympic Athletes, Bio-Medical Researchers and Doctors
DEXA stands for ‘Dual Energy X-Ray Absorptiometry’. DEXA is a whole-body scan using very low doses of X-Rays to actually SEE all the fat and bone and muscle in the human body. Where other tests make educated ‘guesses’ about what’s inside our body, DEXA actually looks and measures with incredible precision. And the whole test takes 7-14 minutes and can be done in regular clothing. The results of the test are detailed and amazing. We can see how much fat and muscle are in each leg, each arm and, most important of all, INSIDE your abdomen where we have a very special kind of fat called ‘visceral fat’. DEXA measures all of this DIRECTLY-by using X-Rays to look inside the body and using a powerful computer to process what the machine ‘sees’ into beautiful images and accurate data.
Why DEXA Matters
DEXA matters because body composition matters. First of all, it matters because it is a measure of your overall health and physical fitness. But where DEXA really comes into its own is for measuring CHANGES in body composition. Athletes need to know if a new training regimen is really working. But sometimes, especially in the first few weeks, changes to body composition are small and none of the other ‘junk’ tests are sensitive enough to see those changes. But DEXA IS. Using DEXA, you can tell exactly how much muscle you have gained and how much fat you have lost. That’s why NFL and NBA teams use DEXA. It’s why you should too.
Another situation where DEXA is critical is weight loss. Anyone who has ever tried to lose weight knows that numbers on the scale are confusing and hard to interpret. People can lose weight but gain fat. People can lose fat but gain weight. With a scale there is no way to know. With cheap mass-market body fat testers, the accuracy is too low. But with DEXA…you can finally look and see EXACTLY how you’re doing. DEXA will show you exactly how much fat and muscle you have. EXACTLY.
